Life these days:

Busy...really busy.  I feel being a teacher has kind of consumed me, but I suppose in a good way.  I spend a lot of time at school.  But I like it.  My kids are great (most the time) and I've made some really great friends through work.  I guess that's the one big thing that's been missing since I moved up here (a year and a half ago).  I never really made any friends.  It was just James and me.  And as great as he is, he wasn't enough.  Sometimes you just have to have "girl time".  And I finally have that.  I finally have friends.  It's nice.

Sallie Mae must die.

I (obviously) don't really write in here anymore, but what the hell...

I suppose there are two major events in my life worth noting right now.  One being that I got my job assignment for next year.  I will be teaching first grade at Sunset Ridge Elementary in Overland Park.  I found out about 3 or so weeks ago and I guess didn't really think it was worth posting because I wasn't all that excited.  I was under the impression when I signed my contract back in January as a mid-year hire that I'd have a little bit of input to where I'd be working next year.  But apparently not.  I was not offered this first grade job...I was ASSIGNED it.  I didn't even interview for it.  Now some people would say I should just be glad I have a job for next year and that I should be honored that I was hired without even meeting the principal.  But I'm not.  Call it selfish...but I think I should have been involved in the decision making process of my future career.  I'm excited about the grade placement.  I think I'll do really well in first grade.  I suppose what made the whole situation really bad was that THREE days after I found out where I was going to be, I found out that two openings came up at Mission Trail (the school I'm at now).  I'm IN LOVE with that school.  I love the kids, the staff...everything.  I feel really at home there and it sucks to know that I have to say goodbye...

BUT ENOUGH ON THAT.  Now, for the fun news.  I just got back from my first trip to VEGAS!  James and I made a long weekend at went down to Las Vegas...no particular reason, just for fun.  I'd say with everything he has going on at work and particularly with my new job situation, we both really needed a break.  The trip was a blast.  We left Saturday and after arriving and grumbling about one of our bags getting left in Denver, we headed to our hotel.  We stayed at the Hilton Grand Vacations Club on The Strip.  After checking in we went down to the Stratosphere, since it was the closest hotel.  We both ended up making money gambling there that night.  I came out $102 up, which was cool.  After our luck at the craps table, we went up top.  The view was amazing and we decided to ride a couple of the rides they have up there.  One was the Big Shot and it was just like the Detonator at World's of Fun (only more of a thrill since it was over 1,000 ft up in the air).  After that I made James go on Insanity, a new ride they have up there now.  Originally it was my idea and he really didn't want to go on it.  But once I actually saw it in actually I started to chicken out.  I seriously almost had an anxiety attack while waiting in line and probably would have opted out, except James MADE ME since we had already spent $20 on the tickets.  It ended up being great, but damn was I scared.

The next day, we visited the strip during the day...went to MGM Grand and saw the lions, looked around New York, New York and rode the roller coaster (followed by losing $100 on a craps table), checked out the fountains at the Bellagio then had to head back to the hotel for a time-share meeting we had to go to.  That ended up taking up over 2 hours of our afternoon.  Afterwards we were hungry so we headed to dinner at a fancy Italian restaurant called Casa Nicola (yes, ITALIAN, not Mexican).  It was a great dinner...we got dressed up and wined and dined and it was just a lot of fun.  After dinner we gambled a little while then went down to Old Vegas to see the Fremont Experience.  For those of you who have never been, you should go.  It's often overlooked since it's not on the strip but it's really neat.  We stayed there for a few hours, did some gambling, then headed back to the hotel.  I was pretty drunk and the idea was to go home and change shoes then go out again on the strip.  WELL...I ended up passing out early, so we just called it a night.

The next morning we got up early so we could check out of the hotel and still do some site seeing.  We ended up going to the Venetian and Caesar's Palace.  We did a little more gambling....I tried my luck at Roulette for the first time ever, which was fun.  Then we headed back to the airport to make our way back to good ol' Kansas.  All in all it was a great trip.  We're planning on going back soon.

I suppose it's time to update again.  The new job is going well.  I'm learning a lot and having tons of fun with the kids.  Plus, it's nice get a paycheck every other week.

We're finally getting settled into our new place.  There's still a few things we need to buy...like a coffee table and a diningroom table, simply because we never had space for those things at the apartment.

Our puppy loves it here.  She has all kinds of room to run and play.  We have to keep a close eye on her though.  She likes to chew on stuff and even worse is a complete and total alcoholic (probably worse than her parents).  Anytime we have a beer or White Russian or whatever, she is always trying to get into it.  Silly drunken pup.

Things with James are good.  We celebrated Valentine's Day on Wednesday then on Thursday we had our 3 year anniversary.  Funny how it's only been three years...we both seem to think/feel that it's been forever.  But of course, we're like an old married couple now, so what can you expect.  We kept things pretty lowkey for both Valentine's and our anniversary, but it was very nice.  Wednesday, we went to Stonewall Inn, which is just down the street from where we live.  Stonewall is a cute little place.  It used to be an inn back in the day and they've turned it into a cute and quaint restaurant.  We've been there a few times...we like it.  We didn't have a reservation so there was a bit of a wait, which was fine.  We had a couple drinks and shared a bottle of wine and all was well.  We came home after dinner, watched Lost and cracked open another bottle of wine and sat in front of the fireplace, drinking wine.  It was nice.  Then on Thursday we went to Carrabba's after we both got off of work.  I absolutely love the food there.  We spent the night sharing random things with each other that we didn't already know.  Who knew James got beat up as a kid by two kids who were younger than he was?  Wait...I don't think I was supposed to tell anyone...

In way of gifts, we kept things really simple.  I'm not much into flowers on V-day.  I'd rather receive them on any other random day of the year.  So we decided to be a little more practical.  We got each other Bonsai sandals.  I don't know if you guys have seen these things, but they kick ass.  They're made from sheepskin.  We both really liked them, so we decided to buy them for each other.  Cheesy, I know.  But yeah.

Overall, things are going really well.  Expect another update in about a month.  I'm just not as into this xanga thing as I once was....

FINALLY moved into the new place....which is huge!  It's literally 3 times the size of our itty bitty apartment.  We have an upstairs, main level, and a basement, 1.5 bathrooms, TONS of cabinet space in the kitchen, and a fireplace.  I'm loving it.  Granted, we still have boxes all over the place, but it's nice to know that we no longer have to haul boxes and furniture across town in the 10 degree weather.  Between the low temps, high wind speeds, and ice/snow, we sure had our work cut out for us.  And on top of it all, I've been sick since Sunday.  Sucks.  But all is well now.  The cable and internet are now up and running...THANK GOD.  And I have my little baby snuggled asleep on my lap, which is also pretty darn happy.
